Each admission in GREFA, either if it is a rescue case in Andalusia, or a transfer from other administrations or countries and also cases such as specimens captured in the field for their marking, were subject to in-depth exploration by our veterinarians.  They take blood samples for hematology, biochemistry, plumb value and gender determination, as well as a sample in order to determine parasites (Trichomonas spp); in the case of compatibility with such pathology, the host is de-parasite as well as the sibling in the same nest.  Radiographic examination were also carried out.

Castilla-La Mancha rescued two specimens, transferring one to the Project and introducing the other one in a nest in Toledo.  The second one was re-admitted in the infirmary, since it was found on the ground the next day.  A complete exploration was carried out as well as radiology and new samples were taken for hematology and biochemistry analysis, nevertheless, no injury or pathology were found, further than a small wound on the side of the beak.

Both the specimens transferred from CREA Granada and the recovery centre El Chaparrillo respectively, were equally sampled for hematology and biochemistry, plumb levels, Trichomonas spp and gender determination.  Besides, both of them passed ecographic and radiographic exams which were vital since both of them were admitted due to several traumas that caused fractures. One of them was subject to surgery, recovering during its convalescence thanks to the vet monitoring.

The young specimen transferred from CREA Huelva was equally examined and the medical tests showed a hepatic alteration which was treated resulting in a satisfactory recovery during its stay at hospital.

Finally, the specimen from CR El Blanqueo still remains at our facilities due to eye injuries that could jeopardise its recovery, although it’s still soon to decide, and it depends on its evolution in GREFA.

Rehabilitation.

Since the beginning of the Project LIFE, GREFA has rehabilitated 4 individuals suffering from different injuries.  Despite their origin, all of them were admitted due to TRAUMA.

The rehabilitation of these specimens follows two phases:

Passive rehabilitation:

  • Maintenance and re-conditioning: The selection of the facilities is based on the individual’s nature as well and the setting.
  • Behaviour: behavior, psychic issues, adaptation to the environment.
  • GREF Test: Assessment of the physical recovery within the facilities.

Active Rehabilitation:

Muscle building: The muscle building of the animals rehabilitating is the process by which they are forced to perform physical activities, aiming to prepare them for freedom.

The goal is:

  1. To improve muscle power.
  2. To Improve flexion and extension.
  3. To improve resistance and coordination.
  4. The recovery of the muscle tone.
  5. To develop typical ethologic behaviour such as searching for food, fleeing, preying, socialisation…
  6. To acclimate to weather conditions and other external conditions (wind, noises and environment conditions).

Physiotherapy: Mobilisation and stimulation by means of physiotherapy techniques aiming the recovery
